Dearest Pat, Cindy, Michael and Jennifer, and the rest of the family,
Gale and I wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy for the loss of a wonderful husband and great father. We share in that loss too as he was a great friend for so many years and we shared so many great times together. In the days since hearing of Abby's passing, our minds have drifted to many of the good times together and we want to share a few with of them with you and your community of friends and family as a testament to a long and enduring friendship. It mattered little that we were often separated by many miles, even oceans didn't get between us!
In the early years, there were fishing trips on the creeks, rivers and lakes near Dacre and Calabogie. Catching fish came naturally to Abby but there was one time we were both grateful that he didn't latch onto the one that followed his lure right to the side of our canoe. It would have been trouble - it was huge! As long as a paddle! Honest!
Abby became Gale's hero when he and family pulled into our farm with his camper with its shower and shortly after he found a source for hot water in the barn to forever cement his hero position with Gale. For years thereafter when confronted with a domestic challenge I would often get - "If only Abby were here".
There were times of wandering around Amsterdam taking in the city and people watching while feasting on Kibbeling - pieces of
battered and deep fried cod - with frites. Or riding big old Dutch bicycles along the coast of the North Sea in Friesland, freezing our buns off. Henceforth the province became known to us as Freezeland!
Another time on our way to Croatia we changed direction and wound up in Cinque Terre region because there was a heat wave in Croatia. A beautiful alternative! On the day we left we stayed at a small family hotel and shared a pasta (delicious) dinner and homegrown wine (vinegar) with the family. We sat at an open window overlooking a vineyard and across the valley, as evening came on, watched the candlelit windows in the manor/castle on the opposite ridge. Just beautiful!
On another trip we visited Prague not long after borders opened up. When we were leaving the city and out on the Autobahn we were pulled over by a police officer who risked his life chasing us down with an old Lada. Abby kept his peace. I tried to make like I didn't understand the problem. The officer persisted to the point I could no longer feign ignorance. I paid the fine. All of a sudden Abby waves the officer over and pulls out his wallet with police credentials. They became instant friends. When I asked Abby why he didn't do it sooner he smiled back at me and left it there. Oh well - the fine amounted to only about six Euros!
There were trips to Austria where we hiked up the mountain to the snow line and drank the coldest, clearest water you could imagine and we ate schnitzel in Vienna at a fancy restaurant where the waiter pointed out signatures on the dome ceiling of the classical music greats - Strauss, Beethoven, and Mozart and Johnnie Cash! Yes, the one from Nashville. At one place in a small town in eastern Austria we stayed at a lovely small hotel with an indoor swimming pool. Abby wanted to swim but no suit. In Austria that is not a problem - you just go skinny. Not Abby, no sir. He went in his undies. When he started we were the only ones there but shortly after taking the plunge in came a family with kids. Abby spent a lot of time in the deep end!
One time in France we had a very french lunch sitting on the bank of the Loire where we ate french loaf with creme cheese and drank a bottle of local wine. That night we stayed at a BnB in the area that was a hobby farm with a working beehive on the mantel and huge dog called Cesar for our protection. In the morning it was raft of jams, jellies, and preserves from the farm and fresh baked croissants prepared by our host. Some he deemed not fit to serve and tossed them out the French doors into his pond where they were immediately attacked by huge carp.
These are but a small smattering of our shared time and experiences and we are grateful for them all. It was wonderful. And now Abby has gone on another journey before us. But in time we'll join him and together continue the adventure. It'll be grand!

Very sorry to hear of Abby’s passing. The times working under his supervision on the Underwater Recovery Unit during training in Tobermory were some of my best memories. He was fair, always knowledgeable, and one of the few supervisors that everyone respected. Dive training in the upper Niagara River was always a treat. Abby knew it well and passed on information that he had learned from his personal experience. We always looked out for the cache of ginger beer bottles in the river that he once saw while drift diving. A life well lived. What we do in life echoes in Eternity.

Abby was a great guy. He was one of those people that I can't ever remember not knowing. When I was in high school he was policing them. Then I worked at FESS and chaperoned the dances he policed. He escorted me around the track when I worked in the money room and he was on the road when I started working as police dispatcher. My sincere condolences to you. He was a character and I'm sure you will miss him dearly. May he rest in peace

Dear Pat and family, I always considered Abby my guardian angel. This is tragic. You have my sincere sympathy. I will remember the talk he gave me when i was "running away from home" one day in 1975. He said, "Did you have a fight with Dan?" He knew everything about me. He was truly my giardian angel. I knew it for sure when Mike delivered the news about Harry. I will miss him. Dee Dee

Condolences to Pat and the Webb family. I remember the days when I was growing up in the South end of Fort Erie. In those days the police walked a beat and at night checked the doors of the businesses . Abbey was one of those police officers that we got to know when we lived over Camm's Drug Store while growing up and saw Abbey walking the beat in the daytime and heard the rattle of the Drug Store door when it was being checked after they were closed at night. Condolences also to Cecily whom I played Ladies Fastball with during the 70's, 80's and 90's and Shirley who I got to know when I lived in the High Street Apartment's "C" building. I share your pain. I lost my brother Allen after a long, painful fight against Pancreatic Cancer on Jan. 1st.
