Obituary of Edwin Walter Chadwick
Chadwick : Edwin Walter “Ed”
Surrounded by the love and presence of his family, Edwin "Ed" Walter Chadwick passed away on April 23rd, 2024 in Fort Erie at the age of 90. Loving husband of the late Jacqui. Proud father of Terry (Dody) Chadwick and the late Patricia Newton. Cherished grandfather of Edwin C. Chadwick, Susan (Nick Morgan) Chadwick, James (Leah Bowden) Newton and Katherine (Norm Vogele) Newton. He will be sadly missed by his son-in-law Tom (Toni) Newton, his bonus daughter Maggie (Kevin) Noonan, his extended family, and many friends. Predeceased by his cherished companion Louise Coshan.
Ed grew up in Toronto, Ontario and began playing organized hockey at 14 years old. He was an NHL goaltender from 1956-1962, primarily for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and still holds the Leafs record for the most consecutive games played by a goalie at 140. After ending his 14 year professional career as a Buffalo Bison, he settled in Fort Erie, Ontario where he made his home for the last 60 years. After his playing career, Ed spent 33 years as a NHL scout and coach including 19 years with the Edmonton Oilers where he won five Stanley Cups. After retiring, Ed focused on wood carving, raising money for local children in need through his charity golf tournament, and spending time fishing with his oldest friend, Rudy Miller and Family.
The family would like to thank his many friends who were so loyal to him these past few years, the staff at The Willows in Fort Erie, and Dr. Scher and the medical staff at the Douglas Fort Erie Hospital.
Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Ave, Fort Erie entrusted with arrangements. The family will receive friends on Thursday May 2nd from 1-3 and 5-8. Funeral Services will be held in the Funeral Chapel on Friday morning at 11 o’clock. A private interment service will take place. A gathering will follow at Fort Erie Golf Club where he, “Gibby,” and many others spent time enjoying each other’s company and telling stories. If you wish to make a contribution in Ed’s memory, we would ask you to consider the Fort Erie Minor Hockey Association who will use the funds to allow the youth of Fort Erie the opportunity to play the sport so important to Ed.
