Obituary of Irene Mary Armstrong
Irene Mary Armstrong (born April 3, 1922 in Lloydstown, ON)
Passed away peacefully at Douglas Memorial Hospital Palliative Care on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 in her 99th year. Predeceased by her husband of 80 years, Harrie and son Ronald. Proud mother to Eleanor (late Roy) Patricia, Harrie Jr. “Skip” (Jeannette), Robert (late Jacquie) and Sharon (late Dan). Survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends, all of whom she loved deeply.
Mom lived a full life. She raised seven children and three of them during WW2 while Dad was on the battlefield in Europe while at home, she faced the challenges of food rationing. This was no easy task since email, internet etc. to communicate with Dad didn’t exist! Despite the tough times, Mom also experienced some great times. We learned a lot from her and she always kept us moving in the right direction. She was a model grandparent and great grandparent and loved by them all. Like Dad, she was active in the community especially with the church.
Irene was a Practical Nurse, belonged to K-40, Women’s Auxiliary at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, a volunteer for meals on wheels and the cancer society; she always wanted to remain helpful and active within her community. She and Harrie enjoyed many great years travelling in their Winnebago and living 6 months of the year in Sarasota, Florida. Irene’s cooking always brought her family together, especially her sons-in-law; if Irene was cooking they were sure to be there ! We are going to miss her and I know we will never forget the significant impact she had on our lives.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scher and the Palliative Care Team at Douglas Memorial Hospital and the staff at Garrison Place for all the compassionate and dignified care they provided for our mom and grandma.
Cremation has taken place and a Private Family Service will be held at Benner Funeral Services, Fort Erie ON, followed by a Graveside Service at St. Paul’s Anglican Churchyard, where she will be laid to rest with her husband Harrie. If desired, donations in Irene’s memory may be made to Meals on Wheels. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.bennerfuneralservices.ca
