So sorry to hear. I was looking at the picture of the engine sitting under the Central Ave bridge in Fort Erie, I have the exact same drawing. I vaguely remember Carl, but he was good friends with my dad Duane (Duey) Fretz. I also have a cartoon he made on the back of a cardboard box. It's of a time, that they were golfing and a crow stole my dad's beer. I can upload it, but wasn't sure if it's appropriate for this page. My email is felisha20256@hotmail.com Sandra Anderson nee Fretz if you'd like to see it. Also would you like the other drawing? I think it would be better in your extended family home, where it can be proudly displayed. I was also considering taking it to the CN museum if it's still there, but found this page and wanted it to go to you. I hope you still receive these messages. All my best

Sorry to be so late to respond but there were some email mix-ups on my end.
Being the youngest member of my family memories of Carl are a little sparse but I do remember a time spent at a summer cottage north of Montreal. Carl drove the family up from Fort Erie our cottage rental. Dad and Carl did some beer drinking on the sun deck while we kids did the usual swimming, canoeing, and exploring the trails behind the cottage.
When my mom and dad moved to Ottawa in 2000 they moved two of Carl's art works into their apartment. One was painting of a war ship on rough seas in the north Atlantic. It's not clear in my mind if the ship was the exact ship my dad served on or if it was the same class of ship. In the end it doesn't really matter. When my son was in grade 4, my dad offered to speak as a veteran for Remembrance Day. He brought Carl's painting in to show the kids the type of ship he served on during the war.
The second piece of art from Carl is still in my family. It's an ink drawing of a steam engine (the 6218). It hangs proudly on the wall in my study. I've taken a photo of it that I will try to attach in a few minutes.
David, Stephen, and Sharon I'm sorry for your lose and sorry that my family can't be there today.

My heartfelt condolences to Stephen, David and Sharon and their families.
Carl's memorial video has brought back many fond memories of his visits as we were growing up. I especially enjoyed his wonderful sense of humour. One of my most recent memories of Carl is sitting with him at a King Family picnic a few years ago when he told me story after story after story, all of them very funny!
He will be greatly missed.

Uncle Carl had a wonderful smile which was a reflection of his personality. My last memory is of him running with a smile on his face in Waterloo Park at Jack's last family gathering. His dancing also made a real impression at our daughter's wedding 14 years ago. His optimism and friendliness were an inspiration. After my father's death he would come round at Christmas time bearing gifts. I still remember a green wool scarf with gold threads. He was the type of person one is happy to see walk through the front door. He left his mark and is missed.

Watching Uncle Carl's memorial video gives a strong impression of the love and respect his family held for him. There are so many joyful memories captured there.
I have a vivid and happy memory of Uncle Carl to share. it was at a reception celebrating my parents' (Frank & Hilda) 50th wedding anniversary. Uncle Carl hit the dance floor with great enthusiasm and good humour. He outdanced his generation, which was to be expected, as after all, he was the youngest of that group. But he also outdanced and outlasted my generation and my children's generation on the dance floor!
My sincere condolences to cousins Stephen, David and Sharon and their families.
Love,
Joan

Heartfelt condolences to our cousins Stephen, David and Sharon and their families.
Uncle Carl was the "cool" uncle to us, the kids in the eastern (Frank's) branch of the King family. He was much younger than any other uncle, and was really good at stories. He was such fun to be with.
For a brief time when Carl was working at the CNR shop in Montreal, we had relatives with whom we could visit for an afternoon or for dinner! Dad and Carl made sure this happened.
Many folks have commented on Carl's artistic talents. He made a painting of a WWII ship at sea for our father, probably the ship Dad served on, which Dad treasured greatly.
Looking through the photos I am struck by Carl's smile and grin, so like my own father's and our grandfather King's. The family resemblance is remarkable!
May all your happy memories support you at this time.

Reading David's email and the obituary you all wrote brought tears to my eyes.
Life got busy for us all over the years, but none of that can erase the love I had for your dad and the special place in my heart that I have for your family.
So, so glad your dad took the time with your whole family to bring you to Kitchener over the years when my mom was left without any transportation to return the gift after my dad died. And I will never forget "babysitting" all 3 of you in Fort Erie when you were quite young.
I treasure the artwork I have that came from your dad. One given to me directly as a wedding present that hangs in my dining room and reminds me of Stanley Park in BC and some wildlife pastels I poached from mom's house, that are very much my taste that hang in my room.
Your video was outstanding. An amazing treasure for you and your future generations.
Because of COVID, we can't all be there in person on Wednesday and watching on-line means no hugs given or received. I look forward to our next post COVID reunion and seeing you all in person again.
With great love, Marg

Uncle Carl will be sadly missed. Because of distance, most of my memories are from my mother talking about him and of course from his artwork hanging in our house. From my mother's stories I understood how much she loved and admired her youngest brother. When I finally did make the opportunity to visit overnight with him I enjoyed the chance to get to know him a bit. He gifted me with a gigantic pod from the tree in his backyard & by keeping in touch with me for years afterward.
One of the things that stand out for me about Carl is how much he loved his three children and from the photos I just finished looking at it is obvious how much he loved his grandchildren as well.
Our hearts go out to you at this time.

Mr. King was an absolute gem of a man! I was fortunate enough to meet him on a few key occasions through my friendship with his son, Steve. The first occasion was at an OFSAA Track and Field meet in St. Catherine’s. As predicted by Steve, his dad showed up with a painting under his arm...
I instantly loved his desire to chat, and his love of sports. He was clearly very proud of Steve, Dave, Sharon and his grandkids. And his stories were fascinating!
The second occasion was at Steve’s retirement party. It was very evident he was pleased with the turnout~ there were countless tributes by students, teachers and friends. Mr. King was genuinely humbled by the event, and he told me so. We also consumed a few King cans in the parking lot .... “well”, he said, “I guess you could twist my arm to have another...”
The last time we met was over the Labour Day Weekend, when my boys and I helped Steve and Dave roof the family home. An adventure for sure with hard work, great food and drink, and a trip to his favourite pool hall. We had heard that he was a skilled player, but we were amazed at how nimble and spry he and his game were. He seemed to come alive with the cue in his hand.
One of our treasured possessions is a magnificent pencil drawing he did of a steam engine rolling through Fort Erie. It hangs in our favourite room, and we are honoured he presented it to us after the roof.
Mr. King was a gentle, gracious, humble man who raised three teachers. He will be remembered by all of us as a sweet and caring man who put his kids first!

I was fortunate enough to have Carl as my Step Dad. I'll always be grateful to Stephen, David and Sharon for sharing their Dad with my brother and I.
Carl warmly welcomed me into his home and took care of me at a time when my life was chaotic and tumultuous.
I remember many times when he'd ask me to sit next to him so he could offer me some advice or tell me a story, I took this time with him for granted when I was young (with the occasional teenage eyeroll), but grew to look forward to it as I got older.
He was a calm and reassuring presence in my life for as long as I can remember.
He was patient and kind and I always knew he loved my brother and I unconditionally.
Unfortunately, circumstances prevented me from spending as much time with Carl as I would have liked, but I always knew he was there.
He will be sadly missed by all of us who knew and loved him.
The last time I saw Carl, we were sitting by a window in the sunlight listening to some old music.
It surprised me when he got up out of his wheelchair and asked me to dance to one of his favourite songs. We danced the whole song and he gave me a peck on the cheek when it ended. I'll treasure that memory and so many others forever.

This photo is already in the memorial video, but it's one of my favourites of Grandpa and I. One thing I've always admired about my Grandpa King was his attention to detail. He would spend hours researching the subjects of his paintings in order to ensure that there were no mistakes. Whether he was painting a Polar Bear or an Air Craft from WWII or an 18th-century Schooner, every minute component would be there without fail. Perhaps even more impressively, he could still recite back to you facts about each of his paintings and their subject matter even 30 years after he had painted them. This attention to detail is a testament to how much joy he got out of the process of creating things, perhaps even more than the end result. He was incredibly proud of everything he created. I will always remember this characteristic of his as a model example of patience and passion as well as motivation to do what I love every day, just as he did every day of his life.

One of my favourite memories is the time that I spent with Carl listening to his stories about working on steam engines. When he first went to work at CNR in Stratford, he was working in the huge, state-of-the-art shop. He spoke with fascination about the overhead track that would move the entire locomotive from one work area to the other. As he told me about the regrinding of the driving wheels, he would show me with his thumb and index finger the precision needed to keep the wheels safe.
But my favourite part was when he told me about replacing the firetubes inside the engine. (Refer to figure 4.)
He proudly described his special contribution. He would crawl inside the engine, lay down on his back and support the firetube with his strong legs while the rest of the men pushed and pulled the firetube into place.
He was proud of his stature as a small but mighty man.
And that is how I will remember Carl: A proud, mighty man.
Notes (Carl would have approved of the attention to detail):
Picture 1: The 6218 Steam Engine that is displayed near Sugar Bowl Park in Fort Erie.
Picture 2: The CNR Mechanical Department diagram and specifications for the 6218 engine.
Picture 3: Inside the Stratford “shop” showing the overhead track.
Picture 4: A diagram of the parts of a steam engine.
This is a video that Dave would show Carl on his visits.

My favourite memories of Uncle Carl are of him joking and getting us all laughing. I also loved and admired his paintings and pastels, which I remember from childhood at the Mowat Street house. Once, perhaps 20 years ago, I got him to show me photographs of some of his more recent paintings. I remember a train engine with every rivet exactly correct, and a beautifully detailed and accurate painting of a hummingbird getting nectar from a cardinal flower. Little known fact - Carl was my godfather. He was 19 years old!
To all of Carl's family and loved ones, my deepest sympathy on your loss. Sending love from Rosemary and Keith.

Carl King, my Uncle Carl, taught me how to be an uncle, by his example. He would come to my Dad's farm back when David and Betty and I were still quite small, and always had time to wrestle on the floor with us kids. I realise from reading the obit that he was not that much older than I was, but still the nine years difference made him look much bigger. His example really came in handy when I married and instantly became uncle to fifteen kids of various ages.

My condolences to Bonnie and all of Carl's family. He proved that years and age is not the same for all. Having only met him less than twenty years ago, his retirement interests were what kept his mind and body so busy. Walking the dog every day kept him socializing and up to date with what was happening. Telling stories of what life was like for hard workers, dancing, playing pool, beginning to enjoy and share his artistic skills did not slow him down at all. The last year's became harder, but l am sure he is at peace now. Will miss you Carl.
